What is a sworn Portuguese translation?

A sworn Portuguese translation is an official translation between Dutch and Portuguese made by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator binds a signed statement, an official stamp and a signature to a copy of your document, which is what lets Dutch authorities such as the IND, your municipality, the courts and universities treat it as the official version.

What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?

In the Netherlands the two terms describe the same thing. A certified translation here means a sworn translation: one produced by a court-sworn, Rbtv-registered translator who attaches a signed statement and an official stamp. In some other countries a certified translation can be a simple signed declaration without that legal standing, so when a Dutch authority asks for a certified translation it means the sworn version.

If you are sending a document abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they need the sworn translation legalised with an apostille as well.

How much does a sworn Portuguese translation cost?

A sworn Portuguese translation costs from €65 for the first page, with each following page at €75. That base price covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (PDF by e-mail) is an optional add-on for €9.95, and registered shipping within the Netherlands is €9.95, free from €299. Standard delivery is 5 to 7 working days, with express available as an option.

Sworn Portuguese translations — where and why they are used

Portuguese is spoken by around 260 million people: Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. From the Netherlands most demand goes to Portugal (the D7 visa for remote workers, Golden Visa property) and Brazil (commercial trade and immigration).

The difference between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese is real — not only in pronunciation but in spelling, syntax and legal terminology. The 2009 Orthographic Agreement harmonised much of the spelling, but legal terms still diverge: "autuação" against "auto", "requerente" against "requeridor". A sworn Portuguese translator chooses the register that the receiving authority expects.

Portugal is part of the Hague Apostille Convention, so the standard route — Dutch original plus apostille plus sworn Portuguese translation — works for Portuguese authorities. Brazil joined in 2016; before that, consular legalisation was needed. For the Portuguese-speaking African countries such as Angola and Mozambique, consular legalisation through the embassy is usually still required, so check the route with the receiving body before you order.

Common use cases

  • Portuguese D7 visa (passive-income visa) — proof of income
  • Brazilian residence registration (RNE) — birth and marriage certificates
  • Portuguese Golden Visa — property-purchase documentation
  • Brazilian Receita Federal — company registration (CNPJ)
  • Mozambican work permit (DIRE) — Dutch employment contract
